"Last Flare" is an action/thriller short film based on the TRUE STORY of the doomed fishing seiner known as the ACE. The film shares a deeper story on the cost of ambition, the bonds of camaraderie, and the enduring impact of trauma. It suggests that redemption and healing are elusive, and sometimes, the most profound losses are internal.
The lead character, Captain Mitch, portrayed by Scott William Winters (Good Will Hunting) delivers a nuanced and powerful performance.
Based on the frightening true story of the doomed fishing vessel known as the A.C.E. and its crew.
A fishing boat capsizes during a storm, stranding its crew at sea. Despite their emergency beacon failing, they must find a way to survive against the unforgiving ocean...
On Nov. 26, 2005, the A.C.E., a 58-foot drum seiner, was enroute to Dana Point Harbor after a night of bait fishing. Offshore winds which kicked up sharp and quick chop produced vertically shaped waves breaking only seconds apart, slammed the boat relentlessly until it finally capsized; the vessel was already listing from a leaking deck hatch. Because it flipped so quickly, the crew was unable to grab any life jackets. The emergency radio beacon failed to send a signal to the Coast Guard and the life raft failed to automatically inflate. All four crew members were thrown into the cold winter ocean. Their only chance for survival was if they could make it to the skiff, a small boat, which assisted the crew in bait fishing that was towed behind the A.C.E. But there was a huge problem, the skiff was chained to the A.C.E., and the A.C.E. was sinking...
